Sweden introduces stricter rules for obtaining citizenship
The Swedish parliament has adopted a law that significantly tightens the procedure for obtaining citizenship.
Under the new rules, foreigners will now be required to live in the country for at least eight years — three years longer than under the current regulations, SVT reports.
Applicants over the age of 16 will also be required to pass a citizenship test covering knowledge of the Swedish language and civics. In addition, an income threshold has been introduced: at least 241,800 kronor per year (around $22,000).
The new requirements will come into force on June 6 and will also apply to those who submitted applications several years ago.
The amendments, initiated by the government, were supported by a parliamentary majority: 258 votes in favour, 33 against, and 58 members absent.
