Sweden launches probe into 700+ Gaza war crime allegations

12 August 2025 13:37

Swedish authorities are investigating more than 700 reports of suspected war crimes linked to the conflict in Gaza.

The police unit responsible for probing war crimes is currently handling multiple investigations based on submissions from both private individuals and organisations, Caliber.Az reports via Swedish media.

Reena Devgun, team leader for the prosecutors working on these cases, told the radio: "What we are perhaps primarily interested in, then it's about witness observations from people with a connection to Sweden who have actually been on site."

Most allegations concern individuals believed to have committed crimes within the conflict zone, though some involve accusations against prominent figures.

While several investigations have been launched, Devgun declined to provide further details or comment on whether any Swedish citizens are suspected.

She added that the testimonies collected may be used not only in Sweden but also in other countries or by international judicial bodies, including the International Criminal Court (ICC).

According to investigations by the United Nations, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International, there are credible concerns over the targeting of civilians, disproportionate use of force, and potential violations of international humanitarian law by both Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups.

The UN’s Independent Commission of Inquiry has documented numerous incidents involving airstrikes on civilian infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and residential buildings, resulting in substantial civilian casualties.
