Taliban says Iran expelling Afghan refugees

25 May 2023 15:34

The head of the Migration Authority of the Afghan province Nimroz Molvi Abdullah Riyadh has stated that 65,000 Afghan refugees returned to the country from Iran in April.

Riyadh added that nearly 54,000 Afghan refugees had also returned to Afghanistan two months ago, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Tasnim news agency.

He said the figure indicates an increase in the number of returning Afghans from Iran.

Afghan government officials say the trend of Afghan migrants returning from other countries, especially Iran and Pakistan, has intensified in recent months after following national security was maintained in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, other media, in particular the Shafaqna news agency, reported that Iranian authorities deported nearly 200,000 Afghan refugees last year. The deportees themselves said they faced many difficulties in Iran.

"I want the situation in the country to stabilise, I want jobs for young people, it is very difficult to live in Iran," said Abdul Ghafoor, a deportee.

"I had no bright days, I worked tirelessly; we work for the Iranians for a few days and then we get kicked out," Houdadad notes.
