Tashkent Declaration highlights Azerbaijan’s key role in global peace, security
The 4th Conference of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was held on April 6 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, under the chairmanship of Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan.
The conference, which brought together parliamentary representatives from NAM member states, concluded with the adoption of the Tashkent Declaration, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The declaration highlighted Azerbaijan's pivotal role in fostering peace, security, and the core principles of the Non-Aligned Movement. It reaffirmed the country's commitment to advancing the organization’s objectives and promoting global cooperation on pressing issues.
Key points from the Tashkent Declaration include:
Support for COP29 outcomes: The declaration expressed strong support for the outcomes of the COP29 summit held in Baku, particularly endorsing the Baku Climate Pact as a crucial step in addressing climate change and environmental issues globally.
Right of return for displaced communities: A prominent feature of the declaration was its firm stance on the right of return for all forcibly displaced communities, with specific emphasis on the Western Azerbaijan Community. It underscored the importance of ensuring the safe, peaceful, and dignified return of these communities to their homes.
Commitment to combating colonialism: The declaration reiterated the NAM Parliamentary Network’s commitment to combating colonialism in all its forms. It also lauded the Baku Initiative Group for its efforts in promoting these values and furthering the NAM's objectives.
Creation of the NAM women’s platform: The declaration endorsed the establishment of the NAM Women’s Platform, which aims to enhance the role of women within the organization. Additionally, it encouraged greater youth participation in NAM activities to ensure future generations contribute to the movement’s goals.
In addition, the declaration extended special recognition to Sahiba Gafarova for her effective leadership and significant contributions to the development of the NAM Parliamentary Network, underscoring her role in the success of the conference.
