Tasnim: Iran makes no request to prolong truce with US

22 April 2026 09:53

Iranian authorities have not officially commented on US President Donald Trump’s announcement regarding an extension of the ceasefire, nor has Tehran submitted any request to extend it, according to the Iranian news agency Tasnim.

Citing its sources, Tasnim reports that Iranian officials say the Islamic Republic does not plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as long as a US-imposed maritime blockade remains in place. At the same time, it is stated that Iran is prepared to “break this blockade by force if necessary.”

The agency also outlined possible interpretations of Trump’s statement, which did not specify any timeframe for the ceasefire extension:

One interpretation suggests that Trump “lost the war” and has assessed all possible scenarios during the conflict, concluding that military action will not produce results and that exiting the war would be the best option. It adds that even if he chooses to continue the war, it would bring no benefit.

Another possibility raised is that Trump may be attempting to mislead, including through the ceasefire announcement, while either the US or Israel could still carry out strikes, which Tasnim refers to as “terrorist actions.”

The report also mentions a scenario in which the US withdraws from the conflict while Israel continues military actions, allegedly under the pretext of ceasefire violations in Lebanon, though it notes that Iran has previously warned against any unilateral US exit that leaves Israel in the conflict.

Tasnim further states that a continued maritime blockade would be considered an ongoing hostile action. Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the blockade persists and is prepared to forcibly break it if necessary.

The agency adds that the United States is seeking to maintain a “shadow of war” to freeze Iran’s economy and political system, but claims that the current situation differs from previous stages because Iran now controls the Strait of Hormuz.
