Tasnim: US strike on vessels in Strait of Hormuz leaves casualties
At least five people were killed in a US strike on two cargo vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reports, citing a military source.
According to the source, the ships were carrying civilian cargo from the port of Khasab, Oman, toward Iran when they were hit.
The report added that US officials described the incident as a successful operation against Iranian armed boats. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American combat helicopters in the Strait of Hormuz destroyed two Iranian military boats during Operation “Project Freedom,” aimed at escorting commercial vessels out of the Persian Gulf.
Earlier, the Associated Press, citing CENTCOM commander General Brad Cooper, reported that on Monday, May 4, US forces sank a total of six Iranian boats following attacks on US naval and protected commercial vessels.
US President Donald Trump later stated that seven small Iranian boats had been destroyed.
