Georgia urges peace, cooperation to end Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict

23 May 2025 10:27

Georgia has expressed a strong interest in seeing an end to the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, calling for a new era of peace and cooperation in the South Caucasus.

Speaking on Georgian television channel, President Mikheil Kavelashvili underscored his country’s commitment to regional stability and welcomed recent efforts by both Armenia and Azerbaijan to de-escalate tensions, Caliber.Az reports.

"A conflict recently took place between Armenia and Azerbaijan in our region, and we are among those deeply invested in seeing it come to an end," President Kavelashvili said. "I would like to thank the governments of both countries for their willingness to move towards peace. Stability and peace are vital for the region and create opportunities for all three countries."

To recall, significant progress has been made towards a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. In March 2025, the parties reached a final understanding on a draft comprising 17 articles. The Armenian side accepted the two remaining articles proposed by Azerbaijan, thus completing the text of the agreement.

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, stated that the next step involves Armenia removing territorial claims against Azerbaijan from its constitution, as well as the dissolution of the Minsk Group. Meanwhile, Armenia has expressed readiness to restore transport and economic links under the “Peace Junction” initiative.

During the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in April, both sides emphasised the importance of continuing discussions to sign the peace agreement. The European Union and the United States have welcomed the progress made; however, concerns remain regarding Armenia’s constitutional amendments and issues related to territorial corridors.
