Tbilisi mayor says Georgia is “not anyone’s backyard”

19 June 2026 18:56

Georgia’s ruling party Secretary General Kakha Kaladze has sharply criticised a European Parliament resolution, saying it does not reflect the real situation in the country and that his country is “not anyone’s backyard.”

Kaladze, who is also the Mayor of Tbilisi, noted that the document was based on falsehoods and lacked concrete facts, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

“We have seen many resolutions and we know how they are adopted. They have no value because they are based only on lies and contain no specifics or truth. Slander, insults and threats continue,” he added.

He further stressed that Georgia is ready for dialogue, but such an attitude is completely unacceptable when they are spoken to in a lecturing tone.

According to him, Georgian authorities oppose approaches that contribute to polarisation and internal division in society.

“Everyone must respect the Georgian people, our statehood and our independence. Georgia is not anyone’s backyard, but an independent country and a sovereign state,” he emphasised.
