Tbilisi mayor slams EU “double standards” over trade with Russia

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has called the European Union’s “double standards” over trade with Russia shameful. 

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters, criticising Brussels for urging Georgia to sever economic ties with Moscow while some EU countries continue trading with Russia, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.

“They not only buy natural gas [from Russia]. Look at individual European countries from the perspective of trade relations. After the Russian-Ukrainian war began, we were urged to sever trade relations, yet they themselves continue them. This is all shameful,” Kaladze noted.

He said Georgia would have harmed itself rather than the Russian economy by imposing sanctions on Moscow.

“We know very well that by imposing sanctions, we would not have caused any damage to Russia, but we would have harmed our own country, our people, those families and people who work around the clock, doing everything to ensure that their families live in prosperity,” Kaladze added.
