Tehran begins construction of parking-lot bomb shelters

Authorities in Tehran have started building the city’s first parking facility designed to function as a bomb shelter, with plans to convert some existing parking structures into protective shelters, Abdul-Motahhar Mohammadkhani, Spokesperson for Tehran Municipality, announced.

He said at a press conference that the first parking shelter in District 10 of Tehran would be opened in the coming weeks, Iran International reports.

The spokesperson added that several other parking facilities also have the potential to be converted into shelters and, after the necessary modifications and compliance with required standards, could be repurposed for protective use.

The announcement comes amid a sharp escalation in regional hostilities. On the evening of June 7, Iran launched missile strikes on northern areas of Israel in response to Israeli attacks on Lebanon. Tehran had previously warned that it would target Israel if it struck the Lebanese capital.

During the night of June 8, Israel carried out retaliatory strikes on Iran, targeting military sites in the western and central parts of the country. The attacks caused damage to facilities at a petrochemical complex in Khuzestan province.

On the morning of June 8, the Islamic Republic launched another round of shelling against Israeli territory in response to the latest Israeli strikes.
