Tehran, Doha agree to release part of frozen Iranian assets

29 June 2026 12:45

Iran and Qatar have agreed to unfreeze $6 billion of the $12 billion in Iranian assets held in the emirate, the press service of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced.

“According to the reached agreements, $6 billion out of the total $12 billion of Iranian funds held in Qatar will be unfrozen and returned to the country. Work is also ongoing to return the remaining part of these funds,” the presidential press service said.

In a recent report, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) said that the United States and Qatar are working on a mechanism allowing Iran to access part of its frozen assets for humanitarian purchases. According to WSJ, Tehran could initially gain access to $6 billion of funds held in Qatar.
