Tehran proposes Iran-Azerbaijan-Georgia transit corridor under TRACECA

05 May 2025 11:07

Amin Taraffo, adviser to Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development, has announced that Iran has proposed the creation of a new transit corridor linking Iran, Azerbaijan, and Georgia within the framework of the TRACECA initiative.

Taraffo stated that the proposal was introduced during a recent visit to Azerbaijan by Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Mehrdad Bazrpash (also referred to as Farzana Sadyk in the original source), and was met with approval by Azerbaijani officials, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media outlets.

He noted that this year, the Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development will chair the TRACECA Intergovernmental Commission.

Additionally, Taraffo highlighted that a “roadmap” agreement may be signed between Iran and Turkmenistan to boost transit volumes to 20 million tons per year.

“The signing of this document is expected during the meeting of the Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission, scheduled for May 17–19,” he said.

The adviser also mentioned that between March 21, 2025, and March 20, 2026 (based on the Iranian calendar), Iran plans to transport 3 million tons of cargo via the eastern branch of the North-South Corridor running through its territory.

TRACECA (Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia) is an internationally recognized program aimed at fostering economic ties, trade, and transport links across the Black Sea Basin, South Caucasus, and Central Asia, based on the political will and shared ambitions of all participating countries.

Currently, the TRACECA corridor includes the transport systems of 14 member countries of the Basic Multilateral Agreement on International Transport for the Development of the Europe-Caucasus-Asia Corridor: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Romania, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Türkiye, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
