Tenerife: Boy, 10, killed in suspected domestic attack as police shoot father
A ten-year-old boy has been killed in a suspected domestic violence attack in Tenerife, while his mother remains in a critical condition after suffering serious injuries. Police shot the child’s father dead during the incident.
The attack happened in the early hours of Friday, February 20, in Cabo Blanco, a village in the municipality of Arona, in the south of the island of Tenerife, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Officers from the Civil Guard were called to a property at around 01:00 local time following reports of an armed man inside the home.
According to local authorities, the boy was allegedly attacked with a machete by his 34-year-old father. He was pronounced dead at the scene after officers entered the house.
Police said there was a confrontation between officers and the suspect, who was described as “extremely violent”. During the stand-off, one officer was reportedly assaulted. A second officer discharged his firearm, fatally wounding the man.
The injured officer was taken to the hospital and is said to be in a serious but stable condition.
The child’s mother was also attacked with the same weapon and sustained severe injuries to her arms and legs. Emergency responders applied a tourniquet at the scene before transferring her to the hospital, where she remains in a life-threatening condition.
The mayor of Arona, Fátima Lemes, confirmed that several calls had been made to police reporting an armed individual inside the property.
In a statement, the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands said there had been no previous complaints against the man and that he did not have a criminal record.
The incident is being treated as a possible case of domestic violence. An investigation is ongoing.
