Today marks National Flag Day
On November 9 Azerbaijan celebrates National Flag Day. On November 17, 2009, President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree "On the establishment of the Day of the State Flag of Azerbaijan's Republic" and on December 4 of the same year, the National Majlis [Parliament] officially approved November 9 as the National Flag Day.
The flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan was adopted on November 9, 1918, during a gathering of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic's government and enjoyed statehood status until April 1920. At a session on November 17, 1990, initiated and led by the Speaker of the Supreme Majlis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Heydar Aliyev, this flag was approved as the national flag of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The Supreme Council of Azerbaijan's Republic, having adopted a resolution on February 5, 1991 "On the National Flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan", has announced it as the national flag.
After the restoration of independence, Azerbaijan's national flag, a symbol of national sovereignty, has become a holy attribute of statehood to all citizens of our country.
