Togo becomes key market for Georgian exports in 2026

19 March 2026 21:10

In a surprising development, the West African nation of Togo appeared for the first time in Georgia’s foreign trade statistics in February 2026, immediately emerging as one of the country’s top export destinations, the National Statistics Office said.

In February alone, Georgia exported $19.1 million worth of domestically produced goods to Togo, marking the first significant trade between the two countries, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

The bulk of these shipments consisted of locally refined oil and petroleum products. Over the first two months of 2026, roughly 32,100 tons of Georgian oil products, valued at $19 million, were sent to Togo, accounting for about one-fifth of the nation’s total petroleum exports during that period.

Georgia’s production of refined petroleum, primarily from Russian crude, began following the launch of the Kulevi refinery in late 2025.

In addition to oil products, Georgia exported smaller quantities of other goods to Togo in February, including 4,268 liters of ethyl alcohol valued at $116,000 and 923 liters of wine worth $8,700.

Togo is a small West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, bordered by Ghana, Benin, and Burkina Faso. One of the world’s least developed nations, it covers approximately 56,800 square kilometres and has a population of about 8.6 million.

Off the coast of Togo, a significant offshore petroleum market operates, with tankers serving as floating storage facilities. Media estimates suggest that more than 2 million tons of petroleum products can be stored simultaneously near the port of Lomé.
