Tram collision in Strasbourg leaves 50 people injured, several hospitalised
A collision between two trams occurred at Strasbourg's Gare Centrale tram stop on January 11, following a switching error.
Around 50 people were injured, with 15 transferred to a hospital, Caliber.Az reports via French media.
Fortunately, there were no fatalities or critical injuries, as confirmed by firefighters and local authorities.
Approximately 130 firefighters and civil security personnel were mobilized to the site. Emergency services advised avoiding the areas around Place des Halles, Gare, and Boulevard du Président Wilson to facilitate operations. The Strasbourg Transport Company (CTS) reported significant disruptions, with tram lines halted and replacement bus services introduced.
Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot stated that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the collision. Early reports indicate that one of the trams was reversing when the head-on collision occurred. Strasbourg Mayor Jeanne Barseghian, present at the scene, described the incident as "brutal" but emphasized that it is the investigation that will provide clarity.
BFM Alsace interviewed a passenger who was aboard one of the trams. Though unharmed, the witness described the chaotic moment of impact, with passengers falling over each other. He recounted seeing a woman who remained on the ground after the collision while others managed to get up.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, and emergency services remain active to manage the aftermath of this rare and disruptive incident.
