Trump declares emergency in Washington following sewer collapse
U.S. President Donald Trump has approved an emergency declaration for Washington, D.C. in response to ongoing issues stemming from a sewer line collapse that began on 19 January 2026.
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), federal disaster assistance is now available to support local response efforts. The move allows FEMA to coordinate all relief operations to alleviate the impact of the emergency, protect lives and property, safeguard public health and safety, and reduce the risk of further catastrophe.
The assistance covers Washington, D.C. as well as areas in Maryland and Virginia where the District has responsibilities. FEMA has been authorised to mobilise equipment and resources as needed and provide emergency protective measures under the Public Assistance program, with 75% federal funding.
Mark K. O’Hanlon has been appointed as the Federal Coordinating Officer for response operations in the affected area. Additional appointments may be made later based on requests from state authorities and further damage assessments.
