Trump: Falling oil prices could force Russia out of war
US President Donald Trump said he believes the conflict in Ukraine will ultimately be resolved, drawing a parallel with efforts to reach a settlement in the Middle East.
His remarks came during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the latter’s country residence, Chequers, according to Russian media.
“We are working extremely hard on settling the [conflict] between Israel and Gaza. It turns out to be difficult, but we will achieve it,” Trump stated. “The same thing will happen with Russia and Ukraine.”
The American president reiterated that he had once considered resolving the Ukrainian crisis a relatively simple task, largely because of his good personal relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, he admitted that in practice, the process had proven far more complex than anticipated. “He [the Russian leader] let me down, he really let me down,” Trump said.
Expanding on possible conditions for ending the war, Trump argued that a sharp decline in oil prices could play a decisive role. According to him, if global oil prices fall, the Russian leadership “will have no choice but to exit the war.” At the same time, he voiced disappointment that some European countries continue to buy Russian oil, saying such purchases undermine broader Western efforts.
In this context, Trump clarified that he is not prepared to introduce new sanctions against Moscow as long as European states maintain energy ties with Russia.
“I am ready to do other things,” he noted, referring to potential measures Washington could consider. “But not when the very people I am fighting for are buying oil from Russia,” he added, again pointing to Europe’s continued imports.
