Trump hints at Türkiye visit after “excellent” call with Erdoğan on global crises

05 May 2025 20:44

US President Donald Trump described a recent phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as "very good and productive," revealing that the two leaders discussed a broad range of global issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.

“I just had a very good and productive telephone conversation with the President of Turkey, Recep Erdoğan, concerning many subjects, including the War with Russia/Ukraine, all things Syria, Gaza, and more,” Trump said in a social media post shared across multiple platforms, Caliber.Az reports citing Turkish media.

The former president added that Erdoğan had extended an invitation for him to visit Türkiye in the future and that the Turkish leader would also be coming to Washington, DC, although no specific dates were announced.

Trump, who has frequently praised his relationship with Erdoğan, reiterated the strength of their personal rapport during his first term. “The President invited me to go to Turkey at a future date and, likewise, he will be coming to Washington, DC,” he wrote.

Trump hailed what he called his "excellent" personal relationship with Erdogan during his first term, saying the leaders "worked together closely on numerous things, including the fact that he helped return Pastor Andrew Brunson, who was imprisoned, back to the United States — Immediately upon my request."

"In any event, I look forward to working with President Erdoğan on getting the ridiculous, but deadly, war between Russia and Ukraine ended — Now!" he added.

In a separate statement issued earlier, the Turkish Communications Directorate confirmed the call and Erdoğan’s invitation to Trump, noting that Türkiye aims to further enhance cooperation with the United States, particularly in the defence sector.

During the conversation, Erdoğan expressed concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing the situation as having reached a “grave level.” He affirmed Ankara’s readiness to assist in the delivery of humanitarian aid and to support efforts aimed at achieving a lasting peace.

Touching on Syria, Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and promoting stability within its borders. He emphasized the critical role of US efforts in easing sanctions on Syria to support this process and added that a stable Syria would bolster both regional and global peace.
