Trump hints he will ”probably not” run again, but leaves door open for 2028
President Donald Trump has signaled that he will “probably not” pursue a third term in office, addressing speculation about his future political ambitions during an appearance on CNBC.
Responding to questions about his potential candidacy, Trump stated, “I’d like to run,” and added, “I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had.”
Despite these remarks, the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution clearly prohibits any individual from being elected president more than twice — a provision that applies to Trump, even though his two terms were nonconsecutive. Nevertheless, both Trump and his allies have repeatedly explored unconventional pathways for a third term. According to POLITICO, options under consideration include repealing the amendment or attempting to assume the presidency via the vice presidency.
Trump himself has not ruled out such maneuvers, having told NBC in March that there “are methods” to return to office if he so desired.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung offered a supportive statement at the time: “Americans overwhelmingly approve and support President Trump and his America First policies. As the president said, it’s far too early to think about it and he is focused on undoing all the hurt Biden has caused and Making America Great Again.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s official merchandise store is already capitalizing on speculation about a future run, with “Trump 2028” branded goods available for purchase. One product description enthusiastically declares, “The future looks bright! Rewrite the rules with the Trump 2028 high crown hat.”
