Trump mulls labelling Antifa movement as terrorist organisation
US President Donald Trump is considering the American anti-fascist movement Antifa as a terrorist organisation.
The Washington Times reports that he made this statement at the White House.
“It’s something I would do, yeah, if I have support from the people back here,” Trump said, referring to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who stood behind him in the Oval Office.
The president added that he would first like to hear Attorney General Pam Bondi’s opinion on the matter.
Initially, Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that the bullet casings found in the rifle, which was allegedly used to kill right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, had anti-fascist slogans engraved on them.
The Antifa movement doesn’t have a single centralised structure, the term itself is used to refer to all anti-fascists.
For the record, Antifa is a loosely organised, decentralised network of activists who oppose far-right ideologies, including white supremacy, neo-Nazism, and authoritarianism, often through direct action. In the United States, modern Antifa gained visibility in the early 2000s and became more prominent after 2016, positioning itself against far-right groups and ideologies.
