Trump: Other nations to join US in ensuring Hormuz Strait security
US President Donald Trump has stated that several countries have expressed willingness to join efforts to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz.
“They’ve not only committed, but they think it’s a great idea,” the US president said in a telephone interview with NBC News on March 14, though he declined to name specific countries.
According to the network, Trump acknowledged that the United States does not have a precise understanding of whether Iran is mining the strait.
He emphasised, however, that “We’re going to be sweeping the strait very strongly, and we believe we’ll be joined by other countries who are somewhat impeded, and in some cases impeded from getting the oil,” he added.
When asked whether US Navy ships would escort tankers, the president responded evasively, saying only that “it is possible.”
