Trump says Armenia-Azerbaijan peace "pretty close", credits US mediation
US President Donald Trump has said that a breakthrough between Armenia and Azerbaijan may be imminent, describing the progress as the result of successful diplomatic efforts led under his administration.
“For Armenia and Azerbaijan, we worked magic there, and it's pretty close - if not it's already done,” Trump said, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The statement was made during a dinner with American senators, and his remarks were broadcast on major American television networks.
Trump’s comments follow the latest round of peace negotiations between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which took place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on July 10.
The leaders held talks in a constructive atmosphere, with substantive discussions covering key elements of the peace agenda. These included border delimitation, the opening and development of the Zangazur Corridor, and the initialling of a long-awaited peace agreement.
Officials reported that the two sides reached a general understanding to continue the dialogue both through working-level formats and at higher political levels, signalling their shared intent to move toward a final settlement.
