Trump says he gave Iran "a break" at Pakistan’s request
U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington had granted Iran a temporary "reprieve" at the request of Pakistan's leadership.
"I gave them a break at the request of Pakistan. The Field Marshal and the Prime Minister of Pakistan are great. We stopped them from going to war with India," Trump told reporters at the White House, commenting on Islamabad's mediation efforts and the regional situation.
According to Trump, Pakistan continues to play a mediating role in dialogue between Washington and Tehran. Pakistani representatives remain in contact with the Iranian side and are seeking to help facilitate an agreement.
"They’re close to Iran, and they work, and they still are working on trying to get them to do what’s right. But we want a deal that’s meaningful. We want a deal that works," Trump said.
He stressed that the United States is interested in reaching a "serious deal" that is durable and can be implemented.
