Trump seeks European backing on Iran in exchange for support for Ukraine
U.S. President Donald Trump is offering greater support for Ukraine in return for European assistance in addressing security challenges related to Iran, according to Politico.
Following the first full day of G7 discussions, European leaders expressed optimism about their relations with the White House. The positive outlook stems from Trump's apparent readiness to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the war in Ukraine, as well as his need for allied support in reinforcing a framework agreement aimed at securing a ceasefire with Iran.
According to the report, the contours of a potential "quid pro quo" arrangement are beginning to emerge. Under the proposed understanding, Washington would align more closely with European priorities on Ukraine, while European allies would contribute to efforts to secure the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
“He [Trump] will need the capacities of his allies of the G7 and others … to clear Hormuz of mines,” said one of the diplomats cited by Politico.
In return, the diplomat suggested that Europe expects stronger U.S. commitments toward Kyiv.
“In exchange, ‘there’s got to be some give on Ukraine,’” the diplomat added. “There’s a very strong expectation that he will stand by Ukraine. That’s what he told the leaders.”
