Trump seeks to end Ukraine war despite resistance, says Tbilisi mayor

22 December 2025 16:18

US President Donald Trump is trying to end hostilities in Ukraine, but certain countries and politicians are opposing his peace plan, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze noted.

He told journalists that the current war is a major challenge for the modern world, Caliber.Az reports via TASS.

“When Trump was elected president, he had two promises: to end the war and to defeat the deep state. Regarding the war, active negotiations are underway. However, there are challenges: specific countries and politicians oppose ending the war. This is difficult for Ukraine. I would not wish this situation even on an enemy. I hope the war can be stopped,” Kaladze said.

The mayor did not specify which countries or politicians are hindering Trump’s plans to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.

Several European Union leaders, including France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the UK, and Finland, have publicly warned that the US should not pursue peace negotiations with Russia without Ukraine’s involvement and that territorial integrity must be upheld, rejecting plans that might reward Russian territorial gains.

Prominent politicians in Ukraine have said that US peace proposals mirror Russian demands, arguing that such frameworks risk capitulation and fail to represent Ukraine’s interests, thereby fuelling resistance to externally driven plans.

Independent Ukrainian public opinion polls show strong resistance among the population to major concessions in any negotiated peace deal, reflecting widespread scepticism toward peace formulas perceived as unfavourable to Ukrainian territorial control.
