Trump signals “total victory” over Iran within two weeks, predicts oil price plunge
US President Donald Trump indicated that Washington could declare a “total victory” over Iran within the next two weeks, a development that he suggested would also trigger a sharp decline in oil prices, during a tele-rally for South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, CNN reports.
“We’re negotiating now, and they want to make a very good deal. They’re willing to give us everything, they’re willing to give us no nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
The president expressed confidence in the outcome of ongoing efforts, adding, “I think we are winning that battle, but you’re really going to win it over the next two weeks when we declare total victory, it’ll be a total victory, it’ll happen very soon, and oil prices will come tumbling down,” Trump said.
Speaking on Meet the Press, Trump was asked why Iran had not yet agreed to an agreement despite his repeated claims that Tehran was eager to reach one. In response, he said, “Because they’re strong. They’re proud. There are things they never thought they’d be doing that they’re going to have to do. They’ve got no choice. And it takes a little while.”
On June 7, Iran launched missiles at Israeli territory. Tehran described the attack as a response to Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. At the time, US President Donald Trump called on Iran to return to the negotiating table and urged Israel to refrain from a retaliatory attack. Later, the Israeli military announced strikes on Iranian military facilities.
