Trump: US starting new trade deal with Mexico
U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington is beginning work on a new trade agreement with Mexico and expressed confidence that the United States can also reach a deal with Canada.
“We should be able to have a deal with Canada. We're also starting on a new deal with Mexico. A much better deal for the United States. I only make good deals,” Trump told reporters on August 21, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The announcement came as trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa escalated following the collapse of last-minute negotiations. A new wave of U.S. tariffs on a wide range of Canadian goods took effect on August 22.
The United States, Mexico and Canada have been operating under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) since July 2020. The agreement replaced the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement and is scheduled to run for six years.
