Trump warns 200% tariff on French wines as Macron hints at snubbing Gaza peace plan
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 200% tariffs on French wines and champagne after French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly plans to refuse to join his “Board of Peace” on Gaza.
When asked about Macron’s stance, Trump said, "Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he is going to be out of the office very soon," Caliber.Az reports.
"I'll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he'll join, but he doesn't have to join," he added.
Earlier, a source close to Macron confirmed on January 19 that France currently intends to decline the invitation.
The Board of Peace is an international body initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump as part of a multistage plan to manage the aftermath of the Israel‑Hamas conflict in Gaza, approved under UN Security Council Resolution 2803 to help oversee Gaza’s governance, reconstruction and stability.
The initiative’s charter describes the board as an international organisation aimed at promoting stability, restoring lawful governance, and securing peace in conflict‑affected regions, though its text — and invitation letters sent to about 60 countries — extend beyond just Gaza, which has raised diplomatic concerns.
Membership on the board typically lasts three years unless a member country contributes at least $1 billion, a condition that has sparked criticism among allied governments wary of its financial and political implications.
