"Türkiye's Armed Forces have neutralized two PKK terrorists in the Gara region of northern Iraq," the statement read.
Notably, the PKK, recognized as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union, has waged a violent insurgency against Türkiye since 1984. Operating primarily from mountainous areas in northern Iraq near the Turkish border, the group maintains hideouts and training camps.
The PKK has carried out numerous attacks targeting civilians, military personnel, and infrastructure, resulting in over 40,000 deaths, including women, children, and the elderly. Originally seeking an independent Kurdish state or autonomous Kurdish regions within Türkiye, the organization has shifted to asymmetric tactics such as bombings, assassinations, and ambushes.
Efforts at peace have repeatedly failed, leaving the conflict unresolved and contributing to regional instability. Türkiye’s military operations against the PKK in northern Iraq have further strained relations with Iraq and other regional actors, complicating the security landscape in the Middle East.
