Türkish FM declares 2024 a turning point for Syria’s future “Our Story Is Just Beginning”

The year 2024 will be remembered as a turning point for Syria, marking the end of the 61-year oppressive regime, Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced during a briefing for local and international media.

He emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to assisting the Syrian people in rebuilding their nation and stabilizing the region, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

“Today, we are proud to stand on the right side of history. Our relationship with our closest neighbour, Syria, could not have been otherwise. Our story concerning Syria is just beginning,” Fidan stated.

The Foreign Minister identified the eradication of terrorism in Syria as a primary focus for 2025. “Clearing Syrian territory of terrorism will be the most significant task of the coming year. Türkiye is the most effective country in combating terrorism and is determined to succeed in this mission. This marks the end of the road for terrorist organizations in the region,” Fidan declared.

He reaffirmed Türkiye’s steadfast approach to counter-terrorism, stating, “We will continue our fight with the same determination, making no distinction between Daesh and the PKK. Terrorism has neither religion nor nationality. For terrorist organizations, there is no difference between Europe and America. "With the help of Allah, we will achieve our goal of making Türkiye free from terrorism."

Fidan also criticized nations like France for allegedly pursuing their own interests in Syria by leveraging US power. “Ankara does not recognize the interests of such countries that seek to promote their agendas under the guise of alliances,” he asserted.

Reiterating Türkiye’s uncompromising stance against the PKK/YPG, Fidan warned, “Necessary steps [against the PKK/YPG] will be taken, either by others or by us.”
