Turkish media: Erdogan suggests to create Russian-Turkish payment system
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan instructed the ministers to develop other options for re-enabling the Mir banking payment system with Russia.
Turkish and Russian officials already held relevant talks, Turkish TV channel A Haber reports.
“The ministers were instructed to develop with Moscow alternatives to the Mir payment system. Negotiations with the Russian side were conducted by the relevant departments, in particular, by the ministers themselves. In the coming hours, Erdogan will hold discussions on this topic,” the TV channel reported.
In mid-September, the United States announced the possible imposition of sanctions on states that conduct transactions with the Russian payment system Mir. Subsequently, two Turkish banks - Is Bankasi and DenizBank - have suspended services for Mir cards. Later, the US Treasury said they were ready to convince Turkey to reduce the use of the Mir system.
