Turkish police detain Akdeniz mayor and council members in terrorism probe PHOTO
The mayor and several members of Akdeniz's municipal council have been detained in Mersin, Türkiye.
Akdeniz Mayor Hoşyar Sarıyıldız, along with five members of the municipal council, was taken into custody as part of an investigation launched by the Mersin Chief Prosecutor's Office, Caliber.Az reports citing Turkish media.
The detainees are accused of offences including "conducting propaganda for a terrorist organization," "membership in an armed terrorist organization," "violation of the Prevention of Terrorist Financing Law," and "violating Law No. 2911 on Rallies and Demonstrations."
Those detained include Deputy Mayor and Council Member Nuriye Arslan, as well as municipal council members Özgür Çağlar, Neslihan Oruç, Yakup Danış, and Hikmet Bakırhan, all affiliated with the Democratic Party (DEM).
Police teams carried out a search of the Akdeniz Municipality building and established security measures around the premises.
