Turkish president calls for UN Security Council veto be abolished

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called for sweeping reform of the UN Security Council and the abolition of the veto power held by its permanent members.

Erdoğan said the structure of the Security Council still reflects the world order that emerged after the Second World War and does not correspond to current realities, Caliber.Az reports, citing Bloomberg.

In his words, it was necessary to expand the representation of states and ensure a more balanced distribution of responsibility.

“The abolition of the veto power should be both the starting point and the main strategic goal of any meaningful reform,” the Turkish leader said.

Erdoğan also proposed forming a broad coalition within the UN General Assembly around the principle that no state should be able to permanently block the will of the majority of the international community.

According to him, the role of the General Assembly should be strengthened, and the balance between it and the Security Council restored.

“This requires not only broadening representation but also sharing leadership responsibility equitably. We must incorporate the experience, capacity and will of different regions into efforts to address global and regional challenges. In this respect, our call that ‘The world is bigger than five’ is an invitation to embrace a broader understanding of responsibility,” he stressed.
