Turkish president lauds Armenia-Azerbaijan accord, calls for regional integration

11 August 2025 20:36

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has welcomed the agreement reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia as a step towards enduring peace and stability in the South Caucasus, marking what he described as the beginning of a new phase in the region following the liberation of Karabakh.

Speaking to journalists after a Cabinet meeting, Erdogan underscored the significance of the US-brokered understanding between Baku and Yerevan, calling it a turning point after decades of conflict, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

“On Saturday, I spoke with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. After the liberation of Karabakh from 30 years of occupation, a new phase has begun in the region,” Erdogan said.

“It is gratifying that the restrictions imposed on Azerbaijan have been lifted. I expressed my satisfaction with this during a telephone conversation.”

The Turkish leader also confirmed that he had spoken to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to convey a similar message. He highlighted the broader regional implications of the agreement, particularly in terms of economic cooperation and connectivity.

“Today, I discussed the same topic with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The opening of transport and communication lines, borders, and the development of trade will benefit all countries in the region,” Erdogan stated.
