Turkish, Russian presidents focus on escalating tensions in Middle East Iran-Israel Conflict Threatens Regional Stability

16 June 2025 15:48

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation to discuss escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly focusing on the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel.

During the call, Erdogan warned of the dangerous “spiral of violence” triggered by Israel’s military strikes on Iran commencing on June 13, cautioning that the conflict poses a significant threat to the security and stability of the entire Middle East region, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.

The spiral of violence that began with Israel’s attacks on Iran has put the security of the entire region at risk,” Erdogan said.

The Turkish leader emphasized that the complex issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear program can only be effectively addressed through diplomatic means, underscoring the necessity of dialogue to prevent further deterioration of regional peace.

President Erdogan stressed the urgent need to prevent further escalation, underscoring that the Middle East “cannot tolerate a new war.”

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his gratitude to his Turkish counterpart for Türkiye’s instrumental role in facilitating the negotiation process between Russia and Ukraine.

The discussion encompassed a range of pressing issues on the bilateral agenda, including the energy sector, which is expected to be a key topic during upcoming Russian-Turkish engagements at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) later this week, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

The leaders also looked ahead to the forthcoming meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation scheduled for the end of June, where these matters will be further addressed.

Regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Putin conveyed appreciation for Türkiye’s organizational support in arranging direct talks between Russia and Ukraine. Both presidents acknowledged Russia’s strict adherence to agreements reached during the second round of negotiations, including the transfer of the bodies of deceased servicemen and the exchange of prisoners of war.
