Türkiye begins reconstruction of railway link to Armenia's Gyumri

Reconstruction work has begun in Türkiye on the railway line connecting the country to the Armenian city of Gyumri. 

Akyaka Mayor Erduger Toptaş said the restoration project is expected to take between two and three months. He added that a tender has already been announced for the construction work, including a dirt road linking Akyaka and Gyumri, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

According to Toptaş, restoring the railway infrastructure is expected to generate economic benefits for both Türkiye and Armenia while creating new opportunities for cooperation in agriculture and industry.

The project follows an announcement by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the end of May that Armenia would soon begin reconstruction of railway sections in the Yeraskh and Gyumri–Akyaka areas as part of efforts to restore cross-border rail connectivity.
