Türkiye commences construction of strategic railway segment for Zangezur Corridor
On August 22, Türkiye officially laid the foundation for the Kars-Iğdır-Aralık-Dilucu railway, a vital component of the ambitious Zangezur Corridor project aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and trade.
The ceremony was attended by Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, who emphasised the corridor’s profound geopolitical and geostrategic significance Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Speaking at the event, Minister Uraloğlu highlighted the transformative potential of the railway line, stating, “This railway will also make a substantial contribution to regional and global trade. Kars will become the gateway of this line, Iğdır will transform into a global trade hub, and Aralık and Dilucu will serve as the key to the Zangezur Corridor.”
The Zangezur Corridor, designed to establish a critical transport link through the South Caucasus, is expected to not only facilitate increased commerce between Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and beyond but also to bolster economic cooperation in the region. According to the minister, the railway will expedite the opening of borders, fostering greater integration and stability across the South Caucasus.
The Kars-Iğdır-Aralık-Dilucu railway project aims to significantly enhance the regional economy and local prosperity by strengthening access to and integration with Türkiye’s national railway network. Beyond its local and national importance, the project also seeks to reinforce the strategic connection between Türkiye and Azerbaijan and support trade routes extending across Asia.
The railway line, extending from Kars to Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region via the Dilucu Border Gate, is expected to boost freight transport capacity along the Middle Corridor and further develop the regional logistics infrastructure.
