03 June 2025 09:10

On June 3, a strong earthquake struck the southwestern coast of Türkiye, leaving one dead and dozens injured as residents fled in panic, according to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The 5.8-magnitude quake was recorded at 2:17 am local time (0317 in Baku), with its epicentre located 10.4 kilometres off the coast of Marmaris in Muğla province, according to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), Caliber.Az reports.

The tremor occurred at a depth of nearly 68 kilometres beneath the Mediterranean Sea.

The quake was felt across Muğla and Antalya provinces, prompting panic among residents. Many people rushed outdoors, with some sustaining injuries as they attempted to escape buildings.

Muğla Governor İdris Akbıyık confirmed on X that a 14-year-old child died due to a panic attack triggered by the quake. He added that 69 others were injured, most while jumping from balconies or windows in fear. Of those injured, 46 were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Despite the panic, the governor said there were no reports of structural damage in the city.
