Türkiye expects Israel to implement UN resolution on Gaza

26 March 2024 12:46

Spokesman for the Turkish Foreign Ministry Oncu Keceli has said that Türkiye expects Israel to implement the UN’s resolution on Gaza.

“We think that the decision of the UN Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan, as well as an opportunity to send humanitarian aid to Gaza, is a positive step. We would like Israel to comply with the requirements of this resolution as soon as possible,” TASS reports citing Keceli’s statement.

Keceli also "called on the international community to take a common position against Israel to put an end to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and find a permanent solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue".

The UN Security Council previously adopted a resolution prepared by a number of the UN non-permanent members, which contains a demand for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during Ramadan.

Moreover, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit also welcomed the adoption of a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, according to SPA.

Aboul Gheit emphasised that the adoption of the resolution signifies a notable shift in the international stance towards the aggressive war in Gaza. The shift was highlighted by the United States choosing not to use its veto power, he added.

Aboul Gheit underscored the need for collaborative international efforts in the coming period to effectively implement the resolution in a form that brings an end to the ongoing bloodshed.

He affirmed the importance that the resolution’s implementation ensures that the Israeli occupation power assumes its responsibilities and holds it accountable for its crimes.

Meanwhile, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary General Farhan Haq has said that the UN Security Council’s resolution on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is mandatory.

Haq made these remarks during a briefing, Gazeta.Ru reports.

He noted that all UN Security Council’s resolutions are international law, including this resolution on Gaza. They are as binding as international law.

In turn, spokesman for the US Department of State Matthew Miller said that this resolution is not binding.
