Türkiye hosts first meeting of new Security Council

Turkish National Security Council is holding its first meeting with the new staff on June 8.

The meeting, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was attended by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunc, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, National Defence Minister Ysar Güler, Chief of General Staff General Musa Avcever and troop commanders, TRT Haber reports.

Council members will discuss strategic, regional and national security issues, particularly counterterrorism operations in northern Iraq and Syria.

Türkiye’s peace and mediation efforts, humanitarian aid and permanent ceasefire are expected to be discussed, especially developments related to the war between Russia and Ukraine and the Black Sea Grain Corridor agreement.

The meeting will also assess developments in the Aegean Sea, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean and is expected to discuss efforts to protect the rights of Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprusi in the Mediterranean Sea stemming from international law.
