Türkiye, Iran discuss border security, smuggling

Turkish and Iranian officials have held talks on strengthening security along their shared border, with a focus on preventing illegal crossings, combating drug smuggling and improving customs procedures.

The meeting was chaired by Ağrı Governor Onder Bozkurt and brought together Turkish and Iranian border authorities. The Turkish delegation was led by Bozkurt, while Iran was represented by Colonel Mehdi Habibzadeh, commander of border forces in the Makus region, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.

According to a statement from the governor’s office, the sides discussed measures to strengthen border security and prevent irregular migrant crossings, as well as steps to more effectively combat drug trafficking.

The delegations also discussed ways to streamline customs procedures and exchanged views on strengthening cooperation between the two countries on border-related issues.
