Türkiye, Iran discuss regional security, war in Gaza during phone call

15 July 2025 09:43

Turkish Minister of National Defence Yaşar Güler and Iranian Minister of Defence Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh held a phone conversation to discuss bilateral and regional defence and security issues, including the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.

According to a statement published on the Turkish Ministry of National Defence’s official social media account, the two ministers “exchanged views on bilateral and regional defence and security matters.”

Iranian state-affiliated news agency Tasnim reported that the conversation touched on the Iran-Israel war, which has seen heightened tensions over the past weeks. Brigadier General Nasirzadeh pointed out that the attacks on Iran occurred during negotiations and stressed, “We have proven to the world that Iran is not opposed to negotiation and dialogue.”

Highlighting the broader significance of cooperation between the two neighbouring countries, Nasirzadeh said, “Iran and Türkiye, located in a critical region, face common threats and also share common interests and destinies. It is essential for the two countries to consult jointly to ensure security.”

Referring to the 12-Day War, the Iranian Defence Minister claimed that “Iran gave a strong response to the U.S. and the Zionist regime.” He added, “Iran does not seek to expand war or insecurity in the region in any way, but we are ready to respond decisively to any attack.”

Nasirzadeh also expressed scepticism about the current ceasefire efforts, stating, “Iran does not trust a ceasefire with Israel, and therefore we have prepared various scenarios against any malicious actions.”

During the phone call, Minister Güler conveyed condolences to the Iranian people for the loss of military commanders and innocent civilians, expressing sympathy following recent escalations. Condemning the Israeli attack, he stated, “The Iranian people and government defended their homeland heroically against unlawful aggression.”
