Türkiye: Over 1,300 new homes completed in Kahramanmaraş’s "Azerbaijan Quarter"

05 February 2025 17:43

Construction of 1,323 homes in the Azerbaijan Quarter of Kahramanmaraş has been completed, with keys set to be handed over to residents.

The newly built quarter spans an area of 258 hectares, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

By the end of the year, a total of 452,983 homes will be provided to citizens in the earthquake-affected regions of Türkiye, with additional measures in place to ensure employment opportunities.

The report highlights that the reconstruction efforts in the disaster zone extend beyond housing and jobs, also encompassing hospitals and schools.

"One of the hospitals has already begun operations. Within the next few months, four more hospitals will be commissioned," the report states.

"Schools will also be up and running by the end of the year. One of these schools has been named after Azerbaijan's national leader, Heydar Aliyev," it adds.

Note that, on February 6, 2023, southern Türkiye was struck by a devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake near the northern Syrian border, followed by a second powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake nearly nine hours later.

This catastrophe, one of the deadliest to hit Türkiye since 1999, particularly impacted Gaziantep, a city home to many Syrian refugees and humanitarian organizations.

The dual quakes caused the deaths of at least 56,000 people, a number likely to be higher as authorities ceased counting. Aid workers were also among the victims. Over 230,000 buildings were either damaged or destroyed in Türkiye, and around 10,600 buildings in northwest Syria were impacted, including 3,500 in Aleppo alone, many in dire need of structural repairs.
