Türkiye ready to support Russia's continued presence in Syria, says defence minister

15 December 2024 15:21

Turkish National Defense Minister Yaşar Güler expressed Türkiye’s readiness to assist Russia in maintaining its military presence in Syria.

Güler dismissed rumours suggesting that Russia might be withdrawing its forces from the region, emphasizing that there is no definitive evidence of a complete pullout, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

"There is no definitive evidence that Russia has completely withdrawn its forces from Syria," Güler said. He noted that while some Russian ships might have been sent back to Russia for maintenance and rotation, this does not indicate a full withdrawal. “I do not think they will leave at this time,” he added.

Güler further highlighted that Russia remains committed to its presence in Syria, with recent statements from Russian officials confirming their plans to continue operations. "In fact, a Russian official recently announced that they would continue to stay in Syria and that they had discussed this with the new administration," he said.

According to Güler, Russia has consolidated its military units in key locations, particularly in the coastal cities of Tartus and Latakia. He also revealed that Türkiye has conveyed its willingness to offer support if needed. “We conveyed to them that we could provide the necessary support during this process,” Güler explained. However, he noted that Russia has not yet made any requests for assistance.

The Turkish defence minister emphasized that Türkiye is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Syria and the broader region, with a keen focus on defence and security matters.

"Given the latest developments in the region, every country has a strategic plan. We are taking all necessary measures,” Güler concluded.

Notably, since 2016, Türkiye has mounted four military operations across growing swathes of northern Syria, citing threats to its national security.

In its nearly 40-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, and the EU – has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot.
