Türkiye reaffirms its commitment to Montreux Convention

Türkiye will continue to implement the Montreux Convention with the same determination as it has for the past 90 years, according to the country's Foreign Ministry.

The ministry said Türkiye has, to date, applied the convention impartially, transparently and meticulously, Caliber.Az reports.

“As one of the main guarantees of peace, security and stability in the Black Sea, the convention has continuously maintained its validity and demonstrated its value in both peacetime and wartime. Türkiye will continue to implement the Montreux Convention with the same determination as it has until now," the ministry noted.

Türkiye has repeatedly stated that, under Article 19 of the Montreux Convention, it closed the Turkish Straits to the warships of the parties to the conflict in Ukraine and non-Black Sea states following the outbreak of the war to prevent further escalation in the Black Sea region.

The convention signed on July 20, 1936, reaffirms Türkiye’s sovereignty over the Turkish Straits (the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles).
