Türkiye's earthquake death toll exceeds 45,000

The death toll from the devastating earthquakes in southern Türkiye has risen to 45,089.

More than 11,000 aftershocks have been recorded since the earthquakes jolted the country on February 6, Anadolu Agency reports, citing the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The structure noted that 6,368 personnel from relevant services in Türkiye and foreign countries are currently involved in search-and-rescue efforts in the quake-hit area.

More than 234,000 AFAD officers, police officers, soldiers and volunteers are also involved in the recovery activities.

According to the report, more than 18,000 vehicles, including excavators, cranes, bulldozers, trucks, water trucks and trailers, are involved in the rehabilitation work.
It is also noted that more than 358,000 tents have been erected for earthquake victims in need of shelter.

In addition, container camps have been set up in 11 provinces and 332 settlements.

Two earthquakes of over seven magnitudes (at 04.17 local time - 7.7 and at 13.24 - 7.6) hit the southeast of Türkiye on February 6.

Destructive earthquakes were also felt in neighbouring countries, including Syria, Lebanon, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Greek Cyprus and Iraq.
