Türkiye's Erdoğan to run for president in 2028, adviser says

17 September 2026 16:32

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is expected to run for president in the 2028 elections, which could be held on April 16, three weeks ahead of the scheduled date, chief presidential adviser and deputy chair of the Presidential Legal Policies Council, Mehmet Uçum, has stated.

“I assume that the elections will be held on April 16, 2028. This is the date of the referendum on the transition to a presidential system, so it has symbolic significance. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will run for the final time,” Uçum said during an address to the Turkish Press Council, Yeni Şafak reports.

The proposed date coincides with the anniversary of the April 16, 2017 constitutional referendum, in which Turkish voters approved the transition from a parliamentary system to a presidential system of government.

If held on April 16, 2028, the presidential and parliamentary elections would take place three weeks earlier than the date currently scheduled.
