Türkiye’s largest refinery in Izmir suffers explosion, blaze contained VIDEO
An explosion occurred at the Tupras refinery in the Aliaga district of Izmir at approximately 8:00 PM local time on November 25.
The blast reportedly took place in the crude oil furnace within the refinery, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.
While authorities have yet to provide updates on the condition of workers, there have been no reported injuries. A fire, visible from surrounding areas, broke out following the explosion and is still burning.
Emergency teams from Izmir Municipality have arrived at the site, working to control the flames and cool the affected area. Subcontracted workers were seen gathered outside the refinery in the aftermath of the incident.
Tupras issued a statement, saying: "A fire occurred in one of our crude oil units at the Izmir refinery at around 8:00 PM local time. The unit was shut down, and our technical teams, in collaboration with official authorities, have successfully brought the fire under control and extinguished it. No employees have been affected. Operations in other units remain ongoing."
Investigations into the cause of the explosion are expected to follow.
