Türkiye sentences ex-opposition chief to prison over insult against president

Former leader of Türkiye’s Republican People’s Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, was sentenced to 11 months and 20 days in prison on April 14 for statements made about President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The case, heard at the 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance in the city of Mersin, was primarily based on a speech delivered by Kılıçdaroğlu during a rally he previously held in the city, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.

The court ruled that the remarks fell within the scope of the charge of “insulting the president,” as defined under Turkish law.
